When I (Petula) found out that 2 cast members from Who’s Line Is It Anyway, Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood, were performing at Casino Rama I didn’t think twice about booking tickets. Tony is a BIG fan of the show so I got him tickets as a gift and surprised him (I know what you’re thinking…BEST WIFE EVER). I would win big too by getting both a date night & weekend getaway!
In case you assumed, based on its name, that Casino Rama was just a casino you were mistaken. There is so much more to see and do other than gambling. There’s a theatre, several restaurants, a spa and a hotel. With all these amenities on site it’s easy to understand why the casino’s tagline is “Welcome to the Great Indoors”. Casino Rama is an awesome, indoor fun and entertainment, adults-only place to visit for the night or a quick weekend getaway in Orillia.
The drive to Casino Rama is 1.5 hours north from Toronto.
Where To Eat
There are 8 restaurants on site at Casino Rama so there are several options to suit any appetite and budget. We noticed that the casual dining option, Simcoe Yard, was really busy as was the fine dining steakhouse St. Germain’s.We could not decide what we wanted for dinner so we decided to try a little bit of everything at the buffet restaurant Couchiching Court. There was an incredible variety of food so even the pickiest-of-eaters will find something to enjoy.
Our show started at 9PM so we arrived about 10 minutes early to find our seats and get settled. The theatre is a massive 5,000 seat auditorium with screens to both the left and the right of the stage. There’s also a bar at which you can grab a quick drink before the show or during the intermission.
Colin and Brad arrived on stage shortly after 9 and it was non-stop laughter from the start. Their sketch comedy routine included games, audience participation, singing and dancing. It’s amazing to think that their entire show was improv – no script was prepared in advance, in fact, it would be hard to do that when most skits had audience participation. The show lasted about 1.5 hours and by the end there were tears as well as cheeks were aching from laughing so hard.
Where to Stay
The closest and most convenient option if staying over is in the on-site hotel however we chose to stay 15 minutes away by car at Anne’s Cranberry House Bed & Breakfast in Orillia. There are several other hotels and B&Bs in Downtown Orillia. For more suggestions check out the “stay” page on the Ontario’s Lake Country website.
For a more detailed description of Anne’s Cranberry House Bed & Breakfast as well as Orillia stay tuned for our next blog post (coming soon).
The show was so entertaining that we did not want the laughs to end. It was totally worth every dollar and the 1.5 hour drive to Casino Rama. Following the show, we decided that while the night was still young we would try our luck at the slots and tables but sadly it was not our lucky night so we headed back to the B & B.
We woke up the next morning to a delicious hot breakfast graciously prepared and served by our hosts. It was a lovely way to end our overnight stay / weekend getaway in Orillia before we headed home.
